Privacy FAQs

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding Privacy of information. If you find that your question is not answered here, please send your question to your neighborhood Webmaster.

What Personally Identifiable Information of yours is collected?
To participate in the eNeighborhoods program, you must provide your name, street address, phone number, and email address.

What organization is collecting the information?
The Blacksburg Electronic Village collects, stores, and maintains all information provided by eNeighborhood users.

How is the information used?
The data collected will be used by the Town to help support neighborhood projects of various kinds; the Town expects that it will send eNeighborhood members 2-3 emails per month concerning Town services, project information pertinent to your neighborhood, and any general health and safety notices (emergency). BEV staff will send occasional updates and notices, averaging about one email per month. Neighborhood coordinators can send email as needed to members about neighborhood activities.

Who will the information be shared with?
Only Town staff specifically authorized to use this information are provided with access.  Neighborhood coordinators can view telephone and street address information to verify that you live in the neighborhood, but you may choose to keep telephone and street address information private from other neighborhood participants. Only other members of your neighborhood and authorized Town staff can see that you live in the neighborhood. The public at large will not have access to your neighborhood information (i.e. location). Your name and email address will appear in the online BEV Community Directory, but no neighborhood information will be available publicly. The information will not be shared with any other organizations without prior permission. The information will not be provided or used for commercial advertising.

What choices are available to you regarding collection, use, and distribution of the information?
At any time, you may choose to withdraw from the eNeighborhood program. At that time, your personal information can be deleted completely from the system.

What kind of security procedures are in place to protect against the loss, misuse, or alteration of information under the programs control?
The BEV places the highest priority on maintaining your privacy. The BEV follows industry best practices for physically securing its servers, for network security, and for data integrity and data backups. Only BEV staff, with a need to do so, is allowed to update and make changes to eNeighborhoods data.

How you can correct any inaccuracies in the information?
All information used in the eNeighborhood system is under the direct control of individual users. Users may correct personal information as needed.
